The type of dental exam your child will receive depends on their age. Children between 1-2 years old who do not have all of their teeth yet will receive a "lap exam." Dr. Pastoor and Dr. Barlow will clean their gums and any erupted teeth while you hold them on your lap, and discuss their dental health and development with you. Children who are 2-3 years old or older and have most or all of their teeth will receive a standard oral exam and teeth cleaning, similar to what an adult would receive.

As per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), it is recommended to bring your child for their first dental appointment at 1 year old or when their first tooth comes in. A pulpotomy, also known as a "baby root canal," is a treatment typically needed when a child has a deep cavity in a baby tooth that leads to a tooth infection. Dr. Pastoor and Dr. Barlow will make a small opening in the tooth, remove the infected material, and apply a special dressing to help the pulp heal. This process restores the tooth and ensures it stays healthy until it naturally falls out and is replaced by a permanent tooth.

During your child's appointment, a hygienist will clean their teeth, remove plaque and tartar, polish their teeth, and floss to ensure all debris is removed. Following this, Dr. Pastoor and Dr. Barlow will examine their mouth for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease. These routine dental visits every six months help us eliminate hard-to-reach plaque and tartar, while also allowing Dr. Pastoor and Dr. Barlow to monitor your child's oral health and growth. Ultimately, preventive care such as exams and cleanings can save you time and money by preventing cavities and gum disease.
